Woodly

FAQ

What kind of material is Woodly?

What is Woodly?
Woodly® is an entirely new type of carbon neutral and wood-based material for sustainable packaging and products that can be used to substitute traditional fossil-based plastics. Woodly® contains no traditional plastics. Woodly® is recyclable and the material mimics the best qualities of traditional plastics.

Woodly® is a bio-based plastic. Conventional plastics are made mainly from fossil resources, such as crude oil. Bio-based plastics are derived from renewable resources, such as sugar, wood cellulose or maize. The percentage of renewable sources depends on the bio-based plastic. Woodly® has been tested by TÜV Austria, certifying that our material contains 40-60% bio-based materials. The objective is to increase the bio-based content in the future.

Our main raw material is FSC Certified cellulose. It is our main priority, that our raw material comes from forests, that are managed according to international ecological and ethical standards.

Is Woodly biodegradable or compostable?
No, Woodly® is not biodegradable or compostable. We recommend recycling Woodly® packaging together with plastic waste.

Is there plastic in Woodly’s packaging?
Woodly is a new kind of material unlike traditional plastic.

Is Woodly made from 100% renewable raw materials?
We are striving to constantly increase the ratio of bio-based raw materials in Woodly® products, without detracting from their qualities. However, at the moment, a 100% wood-based film is too expensive for use as a packaging material.

Woodly® currently has a certificate that guarantees our products are made from 40-60% renewable raw materials. We strive to continuously increase bio-based without compromising on product properties.

Is Woodly made 100% from wood?
At the moment a 100% wood-based film is too expensive for use as a packaging material.

We strive constantly to improve the environmental impact of Woodly®, without compromising the performance or quality.

Does Woodly contain Bisphenol A (BPA) or other so-called hormone disruptors?
No. Our products do not contain BPA or any other hormone disruptors. We are committed to not use any harmful substances in our products.

What additives do you use?
All the additives used are safe for use in food contact applications.

Questions from Partners

What can be done from your material?
Woodly® is a versatile material, that can be processed with all the conventional techniques: film blowing, cast film extrusion, extrusion coating, injection moulding, blow moulding, thermoforming and furthermore Woodly® can be used to a large number of applications in the consumer goods sector.

What kind of products can Woodly be used in?
The applications vary depending on the products and the brands. We believe in co-designing with our partners. We are constantly developing new partnerships and prototypes.

Is your product suitable for food contact?
Woodly® is suitable for food contact. Our product is safe to use for food packaging and Woodly® complies with the EU regulations.

Do you send samples?
We currently send samples to selected partners only. Please contact jaakko.kaminen@woodnew.wptesti.fi in case you are interested in samples.

Questions from consumers

Where can I buy products packaged in Woodly?
Our aim is that you can find products packaged in Woodly® in the stores as soon as 2020.

How is Woodly recycled?
Woodly® has been designed to be recyclable, making it fully integrated in a circular economy. Woodly® products should be put into plastic waste. However, if Woodly® products end up in mixed waste for incineration, the energy recovered yields 70% less fossil-based carbon dioxide than burning traditional plastics.

Is Woodly edible?
No, it is not. Bioplastics cannot be ingested, and they are not for human consumption.

Woodly’s carbon footprint and Life Cycle Assessment

Is the Woodly zero-carbon footprint based on compensation?
No. We do not use any kind of CO2 compensation. Our zero-carbon footprint is based on a LCA analysis.

For what is your calculation on zero carbon footprint based?
We have used LCA analysis. It is important to use tools, standards, and certifications, that are widely used and hence comparable. For this reason, we have chosen LCA.

How does your material compare to other materials on carbon footprint?
When compared to traditional fossil-based plastics as well as many bioplastics, Woodly® is a significant reduction. Below is a comparison of the Global Warming Potential (GWP) between Woodly® material, LDPE, PP, and PET. GWP is calculated on how much CO2 equivalents is produced per kg of product.

What is a carbon sink?
A carbon sink is anything that absorbs and stores more carbon than it releases as carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The major natural carbon sinks are forests, plants, soil, and ocean. Practically any plant or organism that performs photosynthesis are examples of carbon sinks. Finnish forest formed a carbon sink binding more than 40% of Finland’s greenhouse emissions in 2017. The better we take care of our carbon sinks and the larger they are, we can reach carbon neutrality faster.

How is Woodly better for nature?
We have made a Life Cycle Assessment in accordance to ISO14044 and ISO14040 standards. The LCA assesses the whole process from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use and maintenance to disposal or recycling. The carbon footprint of our product is carbon neutral. This is a significant reduction compared to traditional plastics and their global warming potential (GWP).
